Chapters 1-9 introduce the Protectorate, the annual Day of Sacrifice, Xan the witch, Glerk the swamp monster, Fyrian the tiny dragon, and the baby who becomes Luna. The villagers believe one kind of story. The forest shows another. Luna receives moonlight instead of starlight, and that mistake changes her future.
