Lesson Goal

Today, we will see how the ending brings back the beginning and gives the story a warm close.

1. Before Reading

Chapters 11-12 end the rescue with breakfast. Everyone gathers around the table. Mercy receives toast, praise, and a new place of honor. The story returns to the same images from the beginning: morning light, song, warmth, and toast.

Think first:

  • Why do stories repeat images at the end?
  • What does it mean to honor someone?
  • How can food become a symbol in a story?

2. Key Quote or Passage

“A toast to Mercy”

This phrase is a wordplay. It means people are celebrating Mercy, and it also reminds us of the toast Mercy loves.

3. Feynman Explanation

An ending often answers the question that began the story. At the beginning, Mercy wanted warmth and comfort. At the end, she has both. She is not alone. She is with the family, the neighbors, and the firefighters. The toast on the table becomes a sign that Mercy belongs.

Think of a circle. The story starts with bedtime comfort and ends with morning comfort. The problem in the middle is solved, and the repeated image makes the ending feel complete.

4. Vocabulary Lab

Word / Phrase Korean Hint Student-Friendly Meaning Example Sentence
toast 축배, 토스트 a celebration word or toasted bread They make a toast to Mercy.

hero 영웅 someone who helps others Mercy is treated like a hero.

5. Story Summary

Everyone sits together at the Watsons’ kitchen table. Mercy is given the seat of honor and a stack of hot buttered toast. The characters celebrate her, even though Eugenia still has opinions. As the sun rises, Mercy becomes sleepy, and the Watsons sing a changed version of their song for their “porcine wonder.”

6. Why It Matters

이 결말은 반복 이미지를 읽는 연습에 좋습니다. 토스트는 단순한 음식이 아닙니다. Mercy에게는 사랑, 집, 안전함, 보상입니다. 처음에 Mercy가 찾던 따뜻함이 마지막에는 식탁과 노래 속에서 다시 돌아옵니다.

7. Listen & Shadow

English audio summary idea:
