Lesson Goal

Today, we will compare two opinions about Mercy and practice saying what we think politely.

1. Before Reading

Chapters 5-6 introduce the Lincoln sisters. Eugenia has strong opinions. Baby usually agrees, but she has a quiet opinion of her own. This is a good chance to teach students that an opinion is not the same as a fact.

Before reading:

  • What is an opinion?
  • Can two people see the same animal differently?
  • How can we disagree kindly?

2. Key Quote or Passage

“pigs belong on farms”

This is Eugenia’s opinion. The story repeats it because Eugenia uses this idea to judge Mercy before understanding what is happening.

3. Feynman Explanation

An opinion is what someone thinks. A fact is something we can check. “Mercy is a pig” is close to a fact in the story world. “Mercy does not belong in a house” is Eugenia’s opinion.

Baby Lincoln sees Mercy differently. Baby thinks Mercy is good company. This means Baby sees Mercy as a neighbor, not just as an animal. The simple lesson is: before we judge someone, we should ask, “What else might be true?”

4. Vocabulary Lab

Word / Phrase Korean Hint Student-Friendly Meaning Example Sentence
opinion 의견 what someone thinks Eugenia has many opinions.
belong 속하다 to be in the right place Does Mercy belong in the house?
company 함께 있어 좋은 존재 someone nice to be with Baby thinks Mercy is good company.
monster 괴물 a scary creature Baby thinks she sees a monster.
feelings 감정 emotions Baby thinks Mercy has feelings.

5. Story Summary

Mercy goes next door looking for sugar cookies. Baby Lincoln sees Mercy at the window and becomes frightened at first. Eugenia enters and insists Mercy is only a pig and should not be in a yard or house. Baby is gentler. She worries that Mercy may have feelings.

6. Why It Matters

이 부분은 어린 학습자에게 I think..., In my opinion..., I disagree because...를 가르치기 좋습니다. 영어 원서 읽기는 줄거리만 따라가는 일이 아닙니다. 누가 어떤 의견을 가지고 있고, 그 의견이 공정한지 생각하는 활동입니다.

7. Listen & Shadow

English audio summary idea:

Eugenia and Baby Lincoln see Mercy in different ways. Eugenia thinks pigs belong on farms. Baby thinks Mercy is kind and has feelings. The scene helps us practice opinion language. We can say what we think, but we should also listen to others.

Shadowing sentences:

  1. Eugenia has a strong opinion.
  2. Baby has a quiet opinion.
  3. An opinion is not always a fact.
  4. Mercy may have feelings.
  5. We can disagree kindly.

8. Discuss

  • What does Eugenia think about Mercy?
  • What does Baby think about Mercy?
  • Which opinion feels kinder?
  • How can we tell the difference between fact and opinion?

9. Open Questions

  • Do animals in stories have feelings like people?
  • Is Eugenia wrong, or is she just strict?
  • When is it hard to disagree with an older person?

11. Worksheet

Teacher worksheet pack plan:

  • Fact or opinion sorting
  • Character opinion chart: Eugenia vs Baby
  • Sentence frames: “I think…”, “I disagree because…”
  • Vocabulary match
  • Short response: “Does Mercy have feelings?”
