Mercy Watson Part 2 - A Problem Becomes a Quest

이 레슨은 원문 전체를 대신하지 않습니다. 학생이 영어 원서를 직접 읽을 수 있도록 배경지식, 핵심 구절, 어휘, 해설, 토론 질문, 쓰기 활동을 제공합니다.

Lesson Goal

Today, we will follow cause and effect: a bed falls, people need help, and Mercy goes looking for food.

1. Before Reading

Chapters 3-4 are funny because two different stories happen at the same time. The Watsons think they need rescue. Mercy thinks she needs a snack. The reader can see both problems, so the scene becomes comic.

Think first:

  • What is an emergency?
  • Can a character help others by accident?
  • What happens when two characters understand the same event differently?

2. Key Quote or Passage

“Don’t move”

This tiny command matters because movement makes the problem worse. The bed is not safe, and the Watsons must stay still.

3. Feynman Explanation

Cause and effect means one thing makes another thing happen. In this part, the floor breaks, so the bed falls. The bed falls, so the Watsons need help. Mercy leaves the bed, so the bed can move again. Mercy is not planning a rescue. She is following her stomach. But her food quest may still lead to help.

It is like dropping a pencil in class. You bend down to pick it up, and then you find your friend’s missing eraser. You did not plan to solve the second problem, but your action helped.

4. Vocabulary Lab

Word / Phrase Korean Hint Student-Friendly Meaning Example Sentence
hole 구멍 an open space in something A hole opens under the bed.
rescue 구조하다 to save someone from danger The fire department can rescue people.
still 가만히 not moving They must hold very still.
hungry 배고픈 wanting food Mercy is hungry, not frightened.
crumb 부스러기 a tiny piece of food There is not even a crumb of toast.

5. Story Summary

The Watsons’ bed begins to fall through the floor. Mr. and Mrs. Watson realize they need the fire department, but they cannot move safely. Mercy, however, is focused on hunger. She goes to the kitchen, finds no toast, and remembers that Baby Lincoln next door often has sugar cookies.

6. Why It Matters

이 부분은 의도결과를 나누어 읽는 훈련에 좋습니다. Mercy의 의도는 구조가 아니라 간식입니다. 하지만 이야기에서는 간식 찾기가 구조로 이어질 수 있습니다. 학생은 “What did Mercy want?”와 “What happened because of Mercy?”를 구분해서 말해야 합니다.

7. Listen & Shadow

English audio summary idea:
