Why Is a ‘Deep Apology’ So Confusing?

In Korean, the phrase 심심한 사과 can look odd at first glance. If 심심하다 means “to be bored,” why would an apology be bored?

It is not. In this expression, 심심한 means deep and earnest. The phrase is a formal way to offer a sincere apology. One unfamiliar word can turn a well-meant sentence into a completely different message.

That is more than a small language joke. It is a useful lesson about literacy: reading is not simply matching a written form to the first meaning we remember. It is choosing the meaning that makes sense in context.

A word is never alone

In a 2024 survey of 5,848 Korean teachers, respondents shared moments in which students had misunderstood expressions such as 시발점 (starting point), 두발 자유화 (the relaxation of hair-style rules), and 족보 (a family genealogy). Korean has many homophones, including words that sound the same but use different Chinese characters. 중식 can mean Chinese-style food (中式) or lunch (中食). A school notice saying 중식 제공 is almost certainly promising lunch, because the surrounding context is a school trip and a meal schedule.

The point is not that every reader must memorize every character. A careful reader can pause, look for clues, check a dictionary, and then place the verified meaning back into the sentence.

Literacy is a habit of verification

The important skill has four small steps:

1. Notice that a word is uncertain.
2. Read the surrounding situation.
3. Check a dictionary or reliable source.
4. Read the sentence again with the verified meaning.

This habit matters beyond school. Notices, news reports, contracts, and manuals often contain short terms that affect schedules, money, and rights. The problem is not encountering an unfamiliar word. The problem is deciding that we already know what it means.

Literacy is not the ability to know every word in advance. It is the ability to stay with an unfamiliar word until its meaning becomes clear.
