Lesson Goal

Today, we will follow Auggie through the second half of the year and see how small acts of kindness add up to big change.

1. Before Reading

  • How can a school trip become the scariest and best night of the year?
  • What does it feel like when people who ignored you start to cheer for you?
  • Why is the last chapter called “The Walk Home”?

2. Key Quote or Passage

“Everyone in the world should get a standing ovation at least once in their life because we all overcometh the world.”

(Short excerpt for study only.)

3. Feynman Explanation

In the second half, Auggie faces the nature retreat where older boys are cruel, but his classmates (even ones who were not always nice) protect him. He loses his hearing aids but gains real friends. At graduation, Mr. Tushman gives him the medal for carrying hearts with quiet strength. The whole school stands and claps. Auggie walks home knowing he is loved for who he is inside. The story ends with the idea that everyone deserves to feel like a wonder.

5. Story Summary (Spoiler-Safe)

Auggie goes on the fifth-grade nature retreat. In the dark woods, seventh-graders scare him and Jack. Older classmates come to the rescue and run with them to safety. The “war” at school ends. At the end-of-year ceremony, Auggie receives a special medal. The auditorium gives him a long standing ovation. He finally feels accepted. The book closes with Auggie and his father walking home, happy.

6. Why It Matters

This part shows the full circle: from fear on the first day to joy at graduation. The boys who once stared now protect and cheer. Kindness wins. The last line reminds every reader that they, too, can “overcometh the world” and deserve a standing ovation.
