Lesson Goal

Today, we will see how Auggie’s sister Via feels about her brother and how she balances protecting him with living her own life.

1. Before Reading

  • Do you have a sibling or close family member who needs extra care?
  • How can love for family also feel like a burden sometimes?
  • What does “seeing through someone else’s eyes” mean?

2. Key Quote or Passage

“I never used to see August the way other people saw him. I knew he didn’t look exactly normal, but I really didn’t understand why strangers seemed so shocked when they saw him.”

(Short excerpt for study only.)

3. Feynman Explanation

Via has always seen Auggie as her little brother. To her, his face is normal because she loves him. But when she looks at how strangers react, she suddenly sees him the way they do — and it hurts. This is like wearing special glasses that let you see what others see. It helps us understand empathy for both the person who is different and the people around them.

4. Vocabulary Lab

Word / Phrase Korean Hint Student-Friendly Meaning Example Sentence
burden something heavy to carry (emotionally or physically) Loving someone can sometimes feel like a burden.
protect 보호하다 to keep someone safe from harm Big sisters often try to protect their brothers.
apparition 유령 같은 모습 something that appears suddenly, like a ghost Auggie sometimes looked like an apparition to strangers.
galaxy 은하 a huge group of stars; here, a metaphor for family world Our family is like our own little galaxy.
drift away 멀어지다 to slowly stop being close to someone Old friends can drift away when life changes.

5. Story Summary (Spoiler-Safe)

Via tells her side of the story. She loves Auggie very much but sometimes feels tired of always being the “sister of the kid with the face.” She remembers how people treated them when they were younger. Now that Auggie is in school, Via starts high school and wants some space to be just “Via,” not only “Auggie’s sister.” She has her own friends and problems, including feeling left out by her old best friends. She still protects Auggie but also needs her own life.

6. Why It Matters

This part shows that even loving family members can feel complicated feelings. Via is not selfish — she is human. The lesson is that caring for someone does not mean you stop being yourself. Everyone in a family has their own story.

7. Listen & Shadow

English audio summary idea: “Via has always seen her brother as normal. But she also sees how the world looks at him. She loves him, yet she sometimes wants to be just a regular girl, not only the sister of a boy who looks different.”
