Today, we will understand how easy it is to hurt a friend with words and how hard (and important) it is to stand up for someone.
1. Before Reading
- Have you ever said something mean about a friend when they were not there?
- What is “peer pressure”?
- Is it possible to be sorry after the damage is done?
2. Key Quote or Passage
(Short excerpt for study only. This is the moment Jack hears the cruel words.)
3. Feynman Explanation
Jack is friends with Auggie. But when Julian and the other boys talk badly about Auggie’s face on Halloween, Jack laughs along. Later he realizes Auggie heard everything. Jack feels terrible. This shows that words can hurt more than we think, and that being silent or laughing with the mean kids makes you part of the problem.

5. Story Summary (Spoiler-Safe)
Jack is asked by the school to be nice to Auggie. At first he is a good friend. On Halloween, Jack hears Julian say very cruel things about Auggie’s face. Jack laughs. Auggie hears and stops talking to Jack. Jack feels awful. Later Jack punches Julian when Julian is mean again. The class splits into sides. In the end, Jack chooses Auggie again. Real friendship means fixing mistakes.
6. Why It Matters
This part is the heart of the “Choose Kind” message. Jack learns that being popular is not worth losing a real friend. The story shows that even good kids can do bad things when they are scared of being different themselves.
